In a devastating event on Thursday evening, a severe accident on Interstate 80 resulted in the death of a 47-year-old Tooele man and left another driver seriously injured. The crash, involving five vehicles, occurred around 5:40 p.m. on the westbound lanes just before 7200 West, highlighting the dangers of congested highways.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Chamberlin Neff, the tragedy unfolded when a Ford pickup rear-ended the victim’s vehicle, leading to a fiery collision that quickly engulfed both cars in flames. This catastrophic impact not only claimed a life but also pushed the affected vehicles into three other cars, magnifying the chaos on the road.
The 33-year-old driver of the pickup was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported, though the accident caused additional concerns as nearby brush briefly caught fire, fortunately contained quickly by emergency responders.
This accident occurred during a particularly congested time on I-80, exacerbated by other incidents further west, including a crash near Saltair. Investigators are now examining the role that distracted driving or impairment may have played in this severe collision.
