Layton, Utah – A heartbreaking pedestrian accident near Vae View Elementary School claimed the life of a crossing guard on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred at the intersection of 1600 North and Main Street around 8:30 a.m., according to Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman.
The male crossing guard was struck by a vehicle and tragically died at the scene. His identity has not yet been released. No children or other pedestrians were injured in the crash.
The driver involved in the collision is cooperating with authorities, though details about what caused the accident remain unclear as police continue their investigation.
This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by pedestrians, especially in school zones where crossing guards work to protect children.
Safety Tips to Prevent Pedestrian Accidents
- Reduce Speed in School Zones: Drivers must adhere to reduced speed limits in school zones and remain vigilant for pedestrians, particularly during school start and dismissal times.
- Avoid Distractions While Driving: Distracted driving is a leading cause of pedestrian accidents. Drivers should eliminate distractions such as phones, food, or conversations while operating a vehicle.
- Yield to Crossing Guards and Pedestrian Crosswalks: Always stop when a crossing guard enters the roadway and remain stopped until all pedestrians have safely crossed.
