What Makes Salt Lake City Intersections So Dangerous?

Intersections can be dangerous for drivers for a variety of reasons. Some of the unique dangers present at intersections include:

  • Large amounts of traffic moving through a single area
  • Traffic lights and signs, which can frustrate some drivers
  • Cyclists and pedestrians, who may also be trying to navigate the intersection
  • Unclear right-of-way laws at uncontrolled intersections

Visibility can also be a significant issue at intersections. Depending on the location, you may have to simultaneously pay attention to traffic signs, vehicular traffic, and foot traffic. If the intersection is poorly designed or the weather is bad, it can be easy to miss other traffic that has the right of way.

In addition to head-on and rear-end crashes, motorists are at an elevated risk of being involved in side-impact (“T-bone”) collisions at intersections. These accidents can result in severe or fatal injuries, especially considering that some older cars don’t have as much protection on the sides as they do in the front and back.

Exercise Caution At These Four Salt Lake City Intersections and Roads

Between 2018 and 2022, each of the following streets and intersections were the sites of several fatal crashes. This doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to have an accident if you travel near these places. However, it does mean you should exercise additional care when doing so.

1. South State Street

Between 2018 and 2022, no fewer than six fatal crashes occurred along South State Street at various locations. These locations include the points where it intersects with East 1700 South, East 2100 South, East Kensington Avenue, and East Yale Avenue.

2. West North Temple And North Redwood Road

Two fatal crashes happened at this major intersection between 2018 and 2022. Given that West North Temple is a divided highway, getting through it can be tricky. Similar problems are encountered at other West North Temple intersections, including North 900 West, where another two fatal crashes were recorded.

3. Interstate 15

Approximately 11 fatal wrecks took place along I-15 where it passes through the Salt Lake City area. The most dangerous segment is between I-80 and West 500 South, where more than half of the 11 fatal crashes occurred.

4. Interstate 215

I-215 doesn’t present quite the same risk of fatal car accidents as I-15 — only five fatal crashes occurred on I-215 in Salt Lake City in the years highlighted here. Nonetheless, two of these happened near the junction with West California Avenue, suggesting that drivers should remain alert while traveling through this area.
